What is the Most Efficient Thermostat Setting?
In order to save money and improve the home's energy efficiency, many homeowners seek to find the best thermostat setting for summer and winter. While the exact temperature that one person feels comfortable at can differ from the comfort point of another person, most air conditioners and furnaces have an optimal temperature set point for efficiency, cost effectiveness and performance.
Summertime Thermostat Settings
The U.S. Department of Energy's Energy Star program recommends that homeowners set their thermostats no lower than 78 degrees Fahrenheit during the summertime. Most central air conditioning systems can yield a 15 to 18 degree cooling differential. This difference can accommodate comfort and humidity control in most areas of the country. To further boost efficiency, raise the thermostat by 4 degrees during sleeping hours and by 8 degrees during daytime hours while out of the house. If you plan to be away from home for a few days, set the thermostat to 80F for the duration of your absence.
Wintertime Thermostat Settings
During the winter months, set the thermostat to be at your ideal comfort temperature for wake up time. For most people, this is around 68 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit. For sleeping hours and away from home hours, set the thermostat to be 8 degrees lower than the wake up temperature. If you sleep with an electric blanket or a thick down comforter, you may be able to set the overnight temperature even lower. If you plan to be away from home for several days, set the thermostat to 60F.
Making the Most of a Programmable Thermostat
Taking advantage of the convenience of a programmable thermostat can aid in the temperature setting process. By programming the thermostat to your daily schedule, you will not need to remember to change the temperature setting multiple times every day. For an even greater level of ease, most modern programmable thermostats offer preset schedules and weekly calendars for weekday versus weekend settings.
Programmable thermostats combined with the Energy Star energy efficiency guidelines make it easy for homeowners to save money while staying comfortable. To be sure that the programmable thermostat works properly, be sure to change its batteries annually and have the system professionally serviced once each year.
